Why 'My Mink Betty'?

Why 'My Mink Betty'?
I'm not your common, everyday twenty-something year old and when I graduated from High School I got an equally uncommon gift. My parents found for me a beautiful 1940's mink stole at a garage sale. It had belonged to the woman's Great Aunt Betty who had married late in life to a man with money and had only allowed him to buy her this one luxury. The unusually styled stole has the name, Betty L. Jones, embroidered in the satin lining so that's what I call her. They never had children of their own and the mink was passed to Aunt Betty's niece and on to her daughter. Until it got to me, no one since Aunt Betty had worn it. Now Betty the mink and I go to the theater together on special occasions and I hope that someday I can take her to the Symphony or the Ballet. Although Betty hadn't been worn or loved for many years she was waiting for someone to love her again as are most other things I look for when thrifting.

Not Without Your Ticket

One of the first things I blogged about finding (and arguably my favorite) was my Remington Quiet-Riter typewriter. I found it at a church rummage sale for $5.00. When I was about four years old my sister had a typewriter. I couldn't tell you what brand it was, but I used it to type up "movie tickets" that I would slip under my mother's and sister's bedroom doors on Saturday mornings, inviting them to watch various Disney movies with me, usually The Little Mermaid. I was a very insistent child and, at least once, refused my sister access to the living room because she had left her "movie ticket" in her bedroom. I also would consistently deny tickets to my brother and father because we were watching The Little Mermaid which was a "lady movie" and, seeing as how they were not ladies, it was not for them to watch. At least once my mother told me that I had to show a "boy movie" so that they could watch too.

Recently, multiple friends of mine have expressed interests in owning typewriters and, me being the thrifter, I offered to find them.

This is an Olivetti-Underwood Studio 44 that I found at the Goodwill bins for my friend, Michael. He is very pleased with it and for a small price he became the proud owner of a mid-60's typing machine.

Not shown in the picture is the very nice vinyl case that came with it.

In news of other things I've found at the Goodwill bins, this lemonade glass was sold by Dollar Tree stores everywhere (except of course where I live).
I saw a picture of them on someone's blog a while ago and have been wanting some to go with my Pyrex lemonade carafes. Now I own two. If I'd been able to find them at our local Dollar Tree they would have cost me $1.00 each. At the bins they cost a mere $0.25 each.

This Mary Engelbreit tin is the first M.E. item I've found at the bins so far. It's slightly dented up, and had an original Goodwill sticker price of $0.99 on it. We got it for $0.76. A pretty good price if I do say so myself.

And because it's Mary Engelbreit Monday and still February, here are some fun love-themed prints from the little book I showed last Monday.

  8. Super Thrifter....You get the prize this week. I think you really got a deal on your M.E. tin. It looks to be in fine shape to me. I am about to drag my old typewriter like this one out of our one real closet and take some photos of it. I did not know there were so many people out there that loved the old timey ones. A great post for M.E. Monday.

  10. Those typewriters are so nice, but I've only found one at a thrift store marked at $45 before, which I found a bit steep.

  12. Alyssa, I haven't bought a replacement ribbon for my typewriter yet. I found an interesting website, mytypewriter.com, that has lots of info and sells ribbons, $10/each or 3/$24. Since I have 2 friends for whom I found typewriters, I'm thinking of going that route.

Joyful Thrifter, I'm seriously jealous of your PINK typewriter.
