Why 'My Mink Betty'?

Why 'My Mink Betty'?
I'm not your common, everyday twenty-something year old and when I graduated from High School I got an equally uncommon gift. My parents found for me a beautiful 1940's mink stole at a garage sale. It had belonged to the woman's Great Aunt Betty who had married late in life to a man with money and had only allowed him to buy her this one luxury. The unusually styled stole has the name, Betty L. Jones, embroidered in the satin lining so that's what I call her. They never had children of their own and the mink was passed to Aunt Betty's niece and on to her daughter. Until it got to me, no one since Aunt Betty had worn it. Now Betty the mink and I go to the theater together on special occasions and I hope that someday I can take her to the Symphony or the Ballet. Although Betty hadn't been worn or loved for many years she was waiting for someone to love her again as are most other things I look for when thrifting.

Thrifty Finds at The American Legion

I've been away from the blog for a couple of weeks, but I have a number of thrifting finds to share, so I expect to be posting more frequently.

There haven't been many garage sales around here lately, but Mom and I did attend the local American Legion Post's rummage sale a few weeks ago. We had never been to one of their sales before and weren't able to go until afternoon, so we weren't sure we'd find any bargains.

We were pleasantly surprised.

The first thing I spied was this yellow 1.5 qt 503 refrigerator dish for 25c. Yes, you read that right. Pyrex for 25c!!!!!!

I reached for it. So did Mom.

The world of thrift is not without it's little dramas. I've had something stolen out of my cart at the Goodwill when my back was turned. I've been held prisoner in the back bedroom of an estate sale because another shopper is blocking the doorway while he looks through things and ignores my requests for him to please move. I've had someone lean over me to snatch a piece of Pyrex from under my nose just as I touched it. I realize that sometimes I have to deal with such people. I just don't expect them to be the people I brought with me.

Fortunately, I know her secret tickle spot.

She settled for another 25c item.

Corning 1 qt casserole in the "Wildflower" pattern.
The lid was almost completely brown with baked on grease. This is what it looked like after a lot of scrubbing with Bar Keeper's Friend. And it still needs some work.

A tall vase, a set of cruets, and an OXO push-button salad spinner.
This spinner retails for $18. We paid 50c.

Some milk glass mugs and a Pyrex Visions 2.5 L sauce pan.
This was another item that needed quite a bit of clean-up, but once again Bar Keeper's Friend did the trick. As more people are trying to get away from using metal cookware, Visions pans have become very popular on e-bay, so my local Goodwill charges $6.99 for this pan. We paid 50c.

They also had a table stacked with children's VHS movies still sealed in their packages.

I picked up these 3 for 50c each. I was especially pleased to find "Gay Purr-ee" since it features the vocal talents of my favorite singer, Judy Garland.

Everything we got at this sale cost a total of $4.
